Can you say "Kandinsky?"
On April 13, twenty-eight Howard Wilson Elementary School students and parents gathered at the Carnegie Arts Center for the last parent/child art activity of the semester. "Papas, Painting, and Pasta" was organized by Barbara Carter (Parent Liaison at Howard Wilson Elementary School) and Holly York (Education and Outreach Coordinator at the Carnegie Arts Center). "Papas, Painting, and Pasta" started with a brief art history lesson with Holly York, the Carnegie Arts Center's Education Coordinator. York talked with the students about Russian artist/musician Wassily Kandinsky and how he used color and different types of lines to give his paintings a musical feel. The kids and parents then created their own musical paintings as they listened to Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Tchaikovsky's Ouverture Solennelle, and Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30. After cleaning up the families got to chow down on pasta provided by Mama Mias. Previous parent/child arts activities organized by Barbara Carter and the Carnegie Arts Center, including "Dads, Daughters, and Dance" in February and "Dads, Drama, and Dogs" in March.

Grounded Plains Painting Exhibit by Holly York
Some say April showers bring May flowers, but this April brings a new painting exhibit to the Carnegie Arts Center. The Stacks Gallery at the Carnegie Arts Center will host “Grounded Plains” from April 9 until May 21. “Grounded Plains” is a series of landscape paintings created by Holly York. The series focuses on the changes in light and atmosphere in the sky over the Flint Hills, but some of the paintings (including West of Lansing) feature local landscapes. The exhibit will include the original seven works that comprised Ms. York’s BFA show. Ms. York graduated from the Kansas State University with a BFA in painting in 2008. She was also a member of the Kansas State University Painting Society. Ms. York has been a faculty member of the Carnegie Arts Center since late 2008, and her art classes are some of the most popular children’s classes offered at the Arts Center. April 9 - May 21 Opening Reception Friday, April 9, 6:00 - 8:00 pm |
