February 2010: |
Friends of the Carnegie Arts Center Exhibition In February the Stacks Gallery at the Carnegie Arts Center hosted a special exhibition to celebrate the artist-patrons who have made the Carnegie Arts Center what it is. Contributors to the "Friends of the Carnegie Arts Center" exhibition include two of the founders of the Carnegie Arts Center, Rebecca Johnson and Mary Ellen Maxwell. Rebecca Johnson and Mary Ellen Maxwell were the original co-directors of the Carnegie Arts Center when it opened in the 1980s and they have remained two of the Carnegie's most active supporters, participating in exhibitions, special events, fundraising projects, and volunteering whenever they see a need.
Other contributors include Susan Nelson, Associate Professor of Art at the University of Saint Mary and former Carnegie faculty member; Carolyn Singleton, the current Executive Director of the Carnegie Arts Center; and Vicky and Steve Kaaz, whose etching by Marc Chagall will be on display during the opening reception of the exhibit.
The "Friends of the Carnegie" exhibit is a strong start to the Carnegie Arts Center's 2010 exhibition calendar, featuring pieces created by Tatsao Sato, Marc Chagall, and other well-known artists. This special exhibit will also display works created by the Carnegie's artist-patrons Rebecca Johnson, Susan Nelson, Carolyn Singleton, and Mary Ellen Maxwell. |

Father/Daughter Dance at the Carnegie Arts Center On February 6, a dozen little girls from Howard Wilson Elementary, with their dads and grandpas in tow, skipped into the Carnegie Arts Center. They came for “Dads, Daughters, and Dance,” a special father/daughter event organized by Barbara Carter (Parent Liason at Howard Wilson Elementary School) and Holly York (Education and Outreach Coordinator at the Carnegie Arts Center). The girls giggled in their tiaras and Disney Princess shoes and the dads nervously looked around the room as the dance lesson began. Frank Geib, Ballroom Dance instructor at the Carnegie Arts Center, taught the father/daughter duos the Foxtrot and Merengue upstairs in the dance studio, before cutting them loose to try out their new moves. Once the dance lessons were complete the dads and daughters came back downstairs to the reception room where they were served refreshments and given another opportunity to put on their dancing shoes. Barbara Carter has collaborated with the Carnegie Arts Center on several other parent/child activities in the past, including “Dads, Drama, and (Hot)Dogs” and “Papas, Pizza, and Pottery.” There are more special parent/child activities planned for March and April of 2010. All of these events are designed to help parents take a more active role in their child’s education. “Dads, Daughters, and Dance” was catered by June Meyer (the Carnegie Arts Center’s “Donor of the Year” in 2009) of June’s Cottage and Café.

"A Song for Your Sweetheart" For the fourth year in a row, the Carnegie Arts Center presented “A Song for Your Sweetheart.” The event took place the day before Valentine's Day, Saturday, February 13, at 3:00pm. Once again, the beautiful baritone voice of Dr. William Krusemark, chair of the Fine Arts department at the University of Saint Mary, filled the Carnegie Arts Center with a variety of love songs. Dr. Krusemark was joined by Briana Janas, a freshman at the University of Saint Mary, and Ryan Harris, a University of Saint Mary alum.
