Carnegie Arts Center

A Place for Learning, A Place for Art:

The Carnegie Arts Center's beautiful historic building was originally the first Carnegie Library in Kansas.  What was once the library stacks (where the books were kept) was transformed into a gallery when the library building became the Carnegie Arts Center.

Over the years, the Stacks Gallery has been host to some of the most talented artists in the Kansas City area.  The Stacks has also exhibited works by American Impressionist Birger Sandzen and Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock.

The Carnegie Arts Center hosts ten exhibitions each year, displaying work from local, national, and international artists.  A variety of different media is featured, including painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, and textiles, as well as other media.

Information for Artists

How to Apply for Exhibition in the Stacks Gallery:

The Carnegie Arts Center strives to provide artists a place in which they can exhibit their work and broaden their horizons.  Artists wishing to exhibit their work in the Stacks Gallery should submit an exhibition application packet to the Carnegie Arts Center.  The exhibition packet should include a completed Exhibition Application form (included in the downloadable Stacks Gallery brochure located at the bottom of this page), a resume, an artist's statement, and examples of their work.  (A CD containing 5-15 images of original artwork will suffice.  JPEGs preferred.  No glass negatives, please.)

Completed exhibition packets can be hand delivered or mailed to:

Carnegie Arts Center

601 South 5th Street

Leavenworth, KS 66043

Guidelines for Exhibition:

  • The Carnegie Arts Center prefers exhibiting artists deliver and pick up their own work.  The CAC is not responsible for shipping costs or any art damage that occurs during shipping.
  • Artists are expected to deliver their work at least four days prior to the opening of their exhibit.  Work may be delivered earlier if desired.  Please schedule a delivery date with the office.
  • Exhibiting artists wishing to sell their work must submit a pricelist to the CAC upon delivery of work.  The CAC takes a 30% commission on art sold in the gallery.
  • The CAC is not responsible for preparing your work (matting, framing, etc.).  All artwork must be prepared for exhibition prior to delivery to the CAC.
  • The CAC advertises for their exhibitions and events.  This usually (but not always) includes press releases, newspaper ads, and postcards/mailings.  Exhibitions and events are also included on our website.

Carnegie Arts Center events

  • The CAC provides a guestbook, flowers, food, wine, and punch for the opening reception.
  • On the day/evening of the opening reception, the artist should arrive at the CAC at least 45 minutes prior to the official opening.  (Artists who live outside of the greater Kansas City area are not required to attend the opening reception, but are encouraged to attend if they are able.)
  • The CAC is not responsible for lost or damaged artwork.

Selection Process:

  • Incomplete exhibition applications may be disqualified.
  • Exhibition applications are reviewed by the Executive Director, the Community Development Coordinator, and members of the Board of Directors.  The Exhibition Selection Committee may consist of other individuals as well.
  • Once an artist's application has been reviewed and accepted, they will be notified of open exhibition dates.  Artists who's work is not chosen for exhibition may not receive notice.
  • Please note that the exhibition schedule is often booked a year or more in advance, and that there may not be openings available for quite some time.
